6 CHRISTMAS QUILTING PROJECTS TO START ON NOW

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO BEGIN CHRISTMAS PROJECTS!

The way time flies, the season will be here all too soon. We’ve collected 6 outstanding Christmas quilt patterns to help you get the creative juices rolling. Best of all, these patterns are all free.

While most of these quilting projects are displayed in traditional red and green, vary the colors to suit your holiday decor. Purple and silver, red and gold … color options are limited only by your imagination! Whether you prefer paper piecing, patchwork or applique, you’re likely to find something here that you like.

GEORGE BAILEY STAR BLOCK

Named after the beloved character of the movie It’s A Wonderful Life, this block from Erick Homemade can be used in many ways. Make one block and turn it into a mini wall hanging or use it on a table, on a tote bag or even in a picture frame. Make several and set them together, with or without dividing sashes, into a table runner or quilt.

The block is 12″ and can be made from scraps.

MORE GREAT CHRISTMAS QUILTING PROJECTS TO START NOW

Each of these free Christmas quilt patterns is easy to adapt to a different type of project. Select one square or motif (and adjust the size on a copier if need be), and make a throw pillow, mug rug, table mat or mini wall hanging. Put several squares together and make a table runner. Or, adapt any of them into a full sized quilt. Or mix them up. The paper pieced snowflake would look great alternated with appliqued mittens (using coordinated fabrics, of course!).

COOKIE PLATE CRUMB CATCHER

Julie at The Crafty Quilter provides this tutorial for a charming mini quilt that can be used under that plate of cookies for Santa. This project has many other uses over the holidays, as well. Hang it on a wall, use it in the center of the table, place it on top of a basket of rolls to keep them warm … well, you’re sure to think up a number of ways to display this charming piece!
